13th and 14th April 2007 Boxing Weekend
Up and coming bouts for the weekend
Friday 13th April
Leisure Centre, Altrincham, Chesire, England
Flyweight –
Dale Robinson v Chris Edwards for the Vacant BBBofC British Flyweight Title
And Vacant Commonwealth (British Empire) Flyweight Title
Chris Edward was the shock winner of these two’s pervious encounter 5 months ago, at the time Edwards was regarded as a tough but not hard hitting journeyman, with a record of 9 wins, 12 losses and 2 draws only 2 of his wins had been by stoppage, Robinson was a World Title challenger, who had been in with the likes of Jason Booth and Martin Power and had never been stopped. Edwards won by stoppage in the 8th Round.
The question is will lightning strike twice, in my opinion no it won’t, I think Robinson took Edwards lightly and won’t be making the same mistake again and will be going in for revenge.
Prediction - Robinson win by late stoppage or Unanimous Points
Light Middleweight –
Jaime Moore v Sebastian Andres Lujan
This will be an excellent test for Moore to see if he has what it takes to become a World Champion, Lujan has fought 3 times for a World Title, losing to Antonio Margarito and Sergiy Dzinziruk and holding Mihaly Kotai to a draw. If Moore can win well he must put himself up for a Title shot. However Lujan won’t be putting it on a plate for him and he will have to work every round in order to claim victory and will have to be at his best.
Prediction - Moore win on points (Close)
Fitzgerald’s Hotel & Casino, Tunica, Mississippi, USA
Welterweight –
Zab Judah v Ruben Galvan
Zab Judah is back from his suspension and has put himself back in the same position as he did over a year ago. He had the big money fight lined up with Floyd Mayweather Jr and as a warm up fight he took on the tough Argentinian Carlos Baldomir, with no one expecting him to lose he did just that.
Now this time around with a big money fight lined up against Miguel Cotto, he is taking on Fellow American Ruben Galvan who has only ever been stopped once in 41 fights. Surely Judah won’t make the same mistake again, In theory Galvan should be a punch bag for as many rounds as he can stand up for, which is what Judah needs after being out of the ring so long, but will history repeat itself ? Probably not.
Prediction - Judah win by late stoppage
Convention Center, West Palm Beach, Florida, USA
Light Middleweight –
David Estrada v David Toribio
Estrada is still piecing his career back together after two losses to Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron, He takes on David Toribio who has lost 8 of his last 9. Another confidence builder for Estrada should be an easy nights work.
Prediction - Estrada win by KO before 5th round
Saturday 14th April
Porsche-Arena, Stuttgart, Germany
Heavyweight –
Nikolay Valuev v Ruslan Chagaev for the WBA Heavyweight Title
Can Valuev take another step closer to Marciano’s record ? The man standing in his way unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev. To be honest neither man should be a World Champion, but the way of the Heavyweight division one of them will walk out of the ring with the belt.
Valuev will have a massive height and weight advantage over Chagaev as he has over most opponents. Chagaev is the best fighter Valuev will have faced to date, both shared the opponent of John Ruiz whom they both beat on very close points verdict.
I think there could be an upset on the cards and Valuev will be out worked by Chagaev and Valuev isn’t a real concussive puncher considering the amount of weight he has to put behind it. Valuev will lose soon and I think it could be on Saturday.
Prediction - Chagaev win on points
Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, USA
Super Featherweight –
Manny Pacquiao v Jorge Solis
This for me will be fight of the weekend, this one could go either way, Solis is unbeaten in 35 fights and is a fast hard puncher, Pacquiao is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world at the moment and his demolition job on Erik Morales in his last bout was a awesome performance.
Pacquiao is defiantly going in with the more experience and has also been in with the worlds best, where as Solis hasn’t and Pacquiao will be his first real test. Due to that I am siding with experience and think Pacquiao will out work him.
Prediction - Pacquiao win on points
Super Flyweight -
Jorge Arce v Cristian Mijares for the WBC Super Flyweight Title
Mexican on Mexican, this should also be a cracker, neither man will back down. Arce is unbeaten in 8 years and Mijares for 5 years, Arce has been in with better men and has the most experience. Mijares is the Champion and won’t give up his belt easily and Arce is stepping up a weight to try and take it. You might as well toss a coin for the winner of this bout, but I am going with the Champion to retain, but wouldn’t be surprised if Atce nicked it.
Prediction - Mijares win on Points
Flyweight –
Brian Viloria v Edgar Sosa – WBC Light Flyweight Title
Sosa will come in with the confidence having won his last 14 fights, Viloria hasn’t had it as easy suffering his first defeat to Omar Nino Romero and then finishing with a draw in their second meeting only for the decision to be turned into a No Contest after Romero failed a drugs test. Although Sosa has 5 defeats on his record I feel he will be a little too much for Viloria to handle.
Prediction - Sosa win on points
Light Middleweight –
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr v Anthony Shuler
Chavez Jr has been protected from the word go, he has a record of 30-0-1 but has not one decent name on his record to show from it. The reason is he is very limited and as soon as he faces a decent opponent this will come apparent. Shuler unfortunately isn’t the man to do that and is another hand fed victim to boost Chavez’s record further.
If he is going to get anywhere near the recognition of his father he needs to step up the opponents, his next fight has already been lined up against good but over the hill fighter Michael Stewart. Maybe by the time he is 60-0-1 he will get a decent fight. But he is only 21 and to already had 31 fights it’s a learning curve.
Prediction - Chavez win by KO before 6th round
Light Welterweight –
Victor Ortiz v Tomas Barrientes
Should be a good win for title hopeful Victor Ortiz against experienced journeyman Barrientes, and move him closer to his title shot.
Prediction - Ortiz win by KO before 5th Round
