Exclusive Interview with Super Middleweight Title Contender
Joe Spina – 21 Fights 19 Wins 1 Draws and 1 Loss, 14 Wins by Stoppage
12 Rounds with Joe Spina
1) Your only defeat to date from 21 fights was recently against Peter Manfredo Jr, would you like a re-match to settle the score ?
I would definitely like a rematch with Peter but I probably wont get it because Peter is afraid of getting knocked out. I am not making excuses but If I didn’t break my hand the fight would have ended with him being knocked out. His punches were softer than my 8 year old sons. Manfredo is a joke and Calzaghe proved that last weekend.
2) They are already drawing up the plans for the next contender series, if asked would you like to be a part of it, having already beaten star of the first contender Jesse Brinkley, or are you looking past that and a possible World Title Shot ?
You know what I think that all those guys that take part in the Contender are excellent boxers but I think what happens is the show ruins their reputation because when the show is over they are remembered as a reality TV fighter. And what is really sad is sometimes it goes to there heads and they think they deserve more money than what most cards are willing to pay them and they don’t take the fights. So the answer is no
3) If you were offered a million pounds in cash or an immediate title shot against the opponent of your choice and at the location of your choice, which would you choose, if the fight who and where ?
I would say Roy Jones and it would be in Vegas. I have the utmost respect for that man so I would love to get in the ring with him. Also I would love to fight Pretty boy because we have sparred numerous times and every time he quit because he couldn’t handle my strength. I think Pretty Boy is a joke.
4) You have had some great wins in your professional career, which fight stands out to as your best performance and best win ?
I’m not sure
5) Which moment of your boxing career amateur and professional are you most proud of ?
When ever I win in front of my dad, my dad is very sick so whenever he can show up to my fights they are definitely my some of my proudest moments.
6) You had a close bout with Jose Spearman which was called a draw, do you agree with the decision, there has been a few awful judging decisions in recent years, do you think the way of scoring should be changed and bring in more technology rather than rely on the 3 judges ?
Definitely most definitely, but as far as the Spearman fight Jose is an excellent fighter but he is another guy that has soft hands yes he threw a lot of punches but I think what the judges seen was the fact that I wasn’t fazed by any of his punches. And with the skills he has he should have fought better than he did.
7) What is you favourite fight you haven’t been involved in ?
The Hagler and Sugar Ray fight
Who do you think is the best pound for pound boxer around today ?
Vitali and Bernard Hopkins they are both true true champions. I would love to see a Vitali Lennox rematch I think they are taking or in the works last time I heard.
9) What’s the best question you have ever been asked in an interview ?
Do you now believe that Manfredo is the Pride of Providence and I laughed and said ” The kid is a phoney he’s not even from Providence ”
10) When you retire how would you like people to remember you ?
As a guy who started way down at the bottom and worked his way to the top to become a true champion.
11) Who is the toughest guy you have ever been in a ring with ?
Manu Ntoh definitely had heavy, heavy hands but couldn’t take a punch.
12) Which Boxer has inspired you the most in your career ?
There have been so many but hagler stands out also De la Hoya because he has always been a classy classy champion
Thanks Joe Spina for a great interview
Thanks John

Joe Spina lost to Peter Manfredo and we saw what Peter is made of against Calzaghe.
I would expect him to be too strong for Floyd Mayweather Jr, as he is only a blown up Junior-Welterweight.
I think your a joke, you idiot.

If you dish it out I guess you got to expect it back

Joey is a true champion he has worked very hard to get where he is and he deserves to be recognized as one of the best in that division. And for Ashley when someone is training there trainers put them in the ring with all types of boxers so they can learn different styles and techniques. And Floyd is a bum I cant wait to see Oscar rip his head off…

I agree that Joe has worked hard and is doing well and I hope for him to continue with his progess. However I don’t agree with the statement that Flyod Mayweather is a Bum, that is just a foolish comment.
I would prefer that you kept your silly comments to yourself, if you have a point to make then make it, but how can you say a man who has 37 wins out of 37 is a bum. He is reaching as far as his body will allow in regard to fighting at different weights so he can be remembered as one of the best ever, he has never ducked anyone, and is many peoples choice of the best pound for pound about and he has earned that, he could have just remained at the lighterweight and beaten all comers easily, he has challenged himself and whatever happens he deserves respect for that.
In regard to Joe beating Floyd maybe he would but in reality Floyd is a Feather/Lightweight Joe is a fully fledged Super Middleweight, it’s like saying Vitali Klischko or most Heavyweights will destroy Joe, they are different weights. Lets not get silly now please.

Your right John Floyd has definitely worked very hard to get where he I just think he is way to cocky.
April 15, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Fair enough, but we all know most fighters but on a front for the cameras, many come across cocky who are not at all away from the ring.
April 15, 2007 at 8:02 pm
I think Joey Spina is a cocky bastard. I think he is a joke, and a big shit talker. Just because you broke your hand doesnt mean you couldnt have won. There have been many fighters than broke bones before and still won. As far as Manfredo…. HE’S a CHUMP too! All the Contender fighters are Chumps! There are only 2 great fighters…. Duran, Marvelous Marvin, and The Hitman… They are true fughters! When you doing a charity fight? I would love to box you!!!!!
April 15, 2007 at 8:26 pm
I was tempted not to post this comment due to your pointless abuse, however you have made your comment and then proved that you actually know very little about boxing and if there are only 2 greats ever why have you then listed 3 ????
Unless you are a highly rated Super Middleweight or heavier I would advise against challenging a top rated fighter unless you have an ambulance on stand by. As for calling all the fighters that appear on the contender as chumps, I hope you get your wish and one of them takes you up on your offer of a fight and you find out who is really the chump.

Manfredo punches like an 8 year old!! Get knocked out by a lot of 8 year olds do you?
Manfredo has guts. He took a World Title fight against an unbeaten champion in his home town. In my opinion the fight was stopped too soon. The ref should have stepped in and warned Calzaghe for slapping or, at worst given a standing eight count. Manfredo was never hurt. He was used to bulk out Calzaghe’s record. If it didn’t get stopped prematurely we don’t know what could have happened. I wonder how Spina thinks he would get on against Calzaghe in Wales!!??
April 16, 2007 at 5:57 pm
Very true, but it didn’t look like the same Manfredo of which we have seen in the past, I think the whole thing got to him and he froze a little, the stoppage was premature but the way Manfredo was boxing he would have been stopped soon after, you can’t just cover up on the ropes and let your opponent hit you, you are giving the referee no other choice but to stop you. Don’t think the Calzaghe v Spina fight will be on the cards.
